MVS College Counseling Program: Philosophy

The college selection process promises to be busy and exciting as you embark on your quest to find the “best fit” colleges to match your interests.  During this time, you will seek colleges and universities that are appropriately challenging and well suited to your talents, abilities, needs, and future hopes, wishes, and dreams.  With school and family support, you can discover your options for college undergraduate study.

Because the transition from high school to college is a significant one, MVS offers a structured college counseling program to provide information, advice, support, and various resources.  This web-page is designed to present an overview of the MVS college counseling program, bringing together detailed information to refer to at subsequent stages of your search process.

Central to MVS’s college counseling program is a belief that you, the student, should control the process of choosing a college -- accepting responsibility for knowing yourself, researching colleges, sending for applications, taking standardized tests, soliciting recommendations, writing essays, meeting deadlines, and making final decisions.  The school and your family can assist, but the best results come when you take responsibility for your search process.

Remember that what you do in college is vastly more important than where you go; the energy and commitment with which you invest your talents, once you get there, are keys to accomplishing good study habits and having viable career options after you earn your degree.  As you consider the many colleges and universities where you can pursue your college experience and fulfill your goals, do not overemphasize college admission selectivity, which has little to do with the quality of the experience you might have at a particular college.

Assert yourself in discovering the variety of options that exist for you!  Take charge of the selection process, inform yourself, use your resources; be honest, realistic, and positive, maintaining perspective and a healthy sense of good-humor throughout.

We look forward to working closely with you in the months ahead.  There are many wonderful, amazing colleges out there and we are here to assist you in selecting the “best fit” colleges for you.  Advising each of our students about the college selection process is an opportunity and responsibility we enjoy.

With sincere regards,

The MVS College Counseling Team
